Message of DG, July 2009

Dear fallow Rotarians,

I convey my greetings to you all for the new Rotary year that has began. But by now one twelfth of the year has already gone. You are naturally busy planning for the year's projected activities and, of course, with the preparation for holding installation ceremonies. In the meantime I have completed my official visit to 23 Clubs in Dhaka city. It is gladdening that the clubs have hugely responded to my calls for an eventful year of dreams realised in 2009-10. The quality and level of participation in the year's preparatory events like DTTS at Sylhet, PETS at Bogra, Membership Development Seminar and District Assembly, both in Dhaka, heightens hopes and expectations for yet another successful year of service, fellowship, diversity, integrity and leadership that constitute the core value of Rotary.

Individual Rotary Clubs, being the basic units, are the most important entities in Rotary hierarchy, They are autonomous in their own field of activities. The district extends assistance. support, guidance and inspiration. In the ultimata analysis the quality, character and performance of a district is undeniably reliant on those of the clubs in the district collectively. This is why RI President John Kenny asserts that " In Rotary everything begins and ends with our clubs ". The term clubs connotes the members-the Rotarians of the clubs, led by their leaders. Club leaders, I know you have swung in to actions to reach the target you set for yourselves. RI President suggests thrust areas like water, health and sanitation, hunger and literacy as our menu for service. We ought to attach priority in our planning and implementation of club projects accordingly.

A club's capacity for work and performance largely depends on the numerical strength of members and their quality. Hence I would appeal to you all to put in efforts to augment the membership of your club, but be circumspect is selection. Ensure quality, and not quantity alone. Let us not also lose sight of the important issue of retention of existing members in the club. A member retained is a member gained. Old members are assets of a club, with long association, attachment and grooming as Rotarians.

I would also like to draw your attention to RI Strategic Plan 2007-10. Contribute to TRF, help eradicate Polio from the face of the world and support RI in its world wide humanitarian service extension initiatives. Implement service projects, intensify PR work and sharpen Rotary image, ensure ethics and moral standard in your profession and conduct as Rotarians. Make your club an effective club, provide leadership and help grow leadership within and beyond your club level. Rotary is destined to be what you are doing in Rotary today.

The Future Rotary Is In Your Hands.
